about

in 1988 I was several years into a new chapter of my life. I had been turned onto the idea that a computer called a Mac could be used to compose music even, if you did not have musical skills-ideas yes, chops no.
This Mac had no hard drive, and had only 512K bytes of memory. But there was a software program called Opcode MidiMac sequencer that could allow these seemlngly magical tricks. I heard about through a friend named Gary Todd. Weba and I quickly sunk our energies and money into this idea. Before long we had a Casio CZ 101 that could play 4 different sounds on 4 different MIDI channels. Then we got an Ensoniq Mirage, a rack mount 8 bit sampler. And boy oh boy was it fun to sample weird sounds into that sampler. We were overflowing with floppy discs filled with duck quacks and banging pots and pans. And so this project started. At the time, the sequencer we had (Opcode) did not have a graphic interface. I step timed each note in and edited it numerically. Eventually I had a bunch of strange compositions and then I decided to release these ideas on a Cassette album, since I could not afford to make a vinyl album. the first name for the Cassette album was Rotated Guitar. The idea for the title was based on the fact that I drew a rudimentary guitar in Mac Draw and then tried to rotate it, and all the parts rotated independantly to create a new image-a rotated guitar. I was caught up in the idea of being a film composer, so with a few willing friends I tried my hand at a few cues. such as the theme for Jon Reiss's Baited Trap, or the film noir esque Just a Guest. I was also composing cues for Johanna Went's live shows. So here is the result of that first effort into this world. The following year I created a new project called functions in FOAM. (Also soon to be availab le on this site). This is a collection of scores and live performance cues written at the Catapult Productions studio at Oceanview Ave. Los Angeles 1988.
