about

My initial idea for this project was based on my interest of how movie soundtracks become tied to character and emotion. I wanted that same heightened emotion to be transferred to everyday objects. Eventually I settled on my art dealer's tools of trade; his office and office equipment. I went to Mark because I knew he would totally understand what was needed when I asked him to write a soundtrack for Dan Bernier's rolodex and his filofax and his desk and his telephone and so on. I was not disappointed

-Martin Kersels 8/17/1998

This is music composed as an interactive audio component to an installation by Martin Kersels. The piece was first presented at the Dan Bernier Gallery in LA in 1995 and then recreated for the exhibition "Commotion: Martin Kersels" a retrospective presented by the Madison Art Center in Wisconsin. The recordings were pressed as a CD that was included in the exhibition catalog. The work was originally composed as looping pieces that were triggered by interaction with parts of an Art Dealer's working desk. The playback was originally via portable looping cassettes (answering machine tapes) that were connected to small speakers. The versions on this recording are re-arranged to work as complete compositions with endings.
